What Will Be Your New Year's Resolution?

Christmas is only a few more days away and that means a new year - 2009 - is right around the corner. Like most families, we have our traditions on New Year’s Eve. My Grandma Cope would cook black-eyed peas and we would take a bite right as the new year hit to encourage good luck and a prosperous new year. One tradition I miss sorely is the hot oil fondu! Kinda messy and not really healthy.

Speaking of healthy, the New Year means making a resolution to hopefully better ourselves. Mine is going to be a little more vague this year. Instead of “go to the gym five days a week” or “eat only spinach leaves” I’m going for a more general approach: live healthier. That’s right. Just be healthier. And it begins with what I eat.

Now, anyone that knows me can attest to the fact that I don’t particularly like vegetables, but I eat them when I’m around my son to be a better influence. When he’s not around, well, let’s just say that the only veggies I eat are usually deep fried. I know, I know. Spare me the lecture. So, in my quest to eat healthier I turned to the Web and found a bunch of interesting sites, but one caught my interest … Phytolife.com.

For starters, I liked the site’s design - being a Web designer I really appreciated it’s simplicity and clean layout. It got my attention enough to look around and I was very impressed with the content. I found a great looking recipe for fresh homemade tomato soup! Fresh as in it doesn’t come in can. I didn’t know you could do that! I’m definitely going to give this a shot.

But the site offers more than just free recipes. It also has tips on healthy living and articles that cover a wide range of wellness topics such as Books the Feed Your Spirit and Anatomy of a Comfortable Bed. One article in particular caught my eye. It was written by Phil Lempert, Supermarket Guru®, and titled Putting Kids in Charge of Produce. This is a great idea and one that I have put into practice.

My son, Nic, doesn’t like a lot of fruits and vegetables - he’s a typical little boy - but his parents make sure that he eats them anyways. However, the ones that he does like are good for you and he’s happy to pick them out at the grocery store. He picks out apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes, green peppers, green beans, corn and carrots. All of which are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

If your goal for the new year is to live healthier, start with your diet and if you need some tips, recipes or inspiration, check out the Web, or give Phytolife.com a look-see. Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, everyone!
